What is the procedure for teeth in a day?

The procedure for teeth in a day begins with advanced planning using contemporary digital tools. The first step is gathering data to determine how the teeth should look after surgery and where to place implants to hold the teeth in place. Surgical guides are fabricated from that plan. The second step is to make the replacement teeth. Finally, the last step is surgery and placement of the teeth.

The First Step

In the first step, a digital facial CT scan is taken to give exact dimensions of the jaw bones in 3 dimensions. Dr. Bergman can measure the density and health of the bone and the make sure that enough bone is present for securing teeth on the day of surgery. The scan will also inform Dr. Bergman of any irregularities in the bone, like infections or defects from gum disease. It will also show the angle of the jaw bones, the thickness of the jaw bones, the location of the sinuses, the location of nerves, and even some muscle attachments. A digital scan of the teeth and gums is also taken. It is called an intraoral scan. The digital scan shows the location, size and shape of the existing teeth and gums. The scan is merged with the facial CT to help determine the location, angulation and size of the implants that should be used. The merged data can also be used to plan virtual teeth for replacement. This ensures a natural look and function for your restored smile.

Once the planning is complete, a surgical guide is fabricated for your individual case. The guide is a tool that fits in the mouth and has tubes to guide the implants into the correct position. The guide is very accurate and assures the correct angle and depth of the implants. The guide is made from the digital plan and matches the plan to the mouth. The guide also makes the implant placement faster and smoother because there is no guesswork. Healing can be more comfortable and quicker with a surgical guide.

The Second Step

The second step in placing teeth in a day is to plan and fabricate replacement teeth. This is done before implant placement and begins during the planning stage. In order to determine the correct placement of implants, the teeth need to be digitally created. Once the teeth are digitally created and the implant positions are set, the teeth are printed from a 3D printer and FDA approved materials in our office. Holes are digitally planned in the teeth where the implants will be secured to the new teeth. In office planning and fabrication allows us to closely monitor the progress and quality of the final product.

The Last Step

The last step in the plan is execution. All of the planning and preparation has been done to ensure a hassle-free procedure. Multiple sedation options are available to help you feel comfortable and pain-free. After the day of surgery, soreness is normal. Usually, over the counter pain relievers control the discomfort. More specific instructions are provided leading up to the day of the procedure and our experienced team is here to answer any questions and help during any stage of treatment.

Why would you want teeth in a day?

This treatment allows you to have new teeth where and when it is most needful. With missing or broken front teeth, Teeth in a Day provides an immediate restoration of your smile without having to wait months. When you have an entire mouth full of bad teeth, this procedure can reestablish your ability to chew and prevent further bone loss. You can leave our office with new teeth on the same day as the surgery.

Conventional dental implant treatment takes months to complete. First, Implant surgery is performed; then, a second stage surgery is performed to contour the gums; last, impressions are made and teeth are made to attach to the implants. This is a successful, proven method in implant dentistry with success rates over 95%. New advances in implant design and new understandings in implant prosthetics allow Dr. Bergman to achieve similar success rates with Teeth in a Day.

Even with teeth in a day, the implant connection to the bone still has to develop. The technical term for this is osseointegration. It is the process where bone cells grow onto the implant body and form a solid union with the post. The implant becomes fused with your jawbone. After several months, the process of osseointegration is complete and the implant is firm, strong and stable. The reason it takes so long is because bone takes a long time to grow and change. Depending on the location of the implant placement, the time can vary from 3-9 months.

Because osseointegration takes time, implants are restored with temporary teeth at first. The implants are connected together with a denture-like temporary. The temporary version of your teeth cannot be removed. Connected implants distribute the stresses and strains of the new teeth throughout the jaw bone. The teeth are designed to look and feel natural.

Should I consider Teeth in a Day?

Not everybody is a good candidate for Teeth in a Day. Dr. Bergman will be transparent about what to expect and whether or not the treatment is possible. The digital facial CT scan can help determine whether immediate placement of teeth on implants should be performed. Where large infections or diseased bone are present, Teeth in a Day is not advised. Implant posts should not be placed in active infections. Some immune system disorders and certain medications cause delayed healing and therefore reduce the success of Teeth in a Day. Future hardship can be avoided with a simple, honest conversation.

While you are healing from Teeth in a Day, you are required to make changes to your daily routines. You will need to change your eating habits. An increased dedication to cleanliness is necessary. The new teeth must remain clean during the healing of the implant post. Inflammation of the gums around the implant can result in bone loss. An antibiotic mouth rinse will be prescribed to help keep the area free from bacterial plaques. The new teeth will take some getting used to. Speech is affected. Chewing is affected. Cleaning habits are affected. But even with these changes, the advantages can far outweigh the drawbacks.
