What are crowns and bridges?
Crowns
Although your teeth are designed to endure several years of constant use, they are still vulnerable to decay, wear, and trauma. At Red Hills Dental, we understand how valuable a healthy, brilliant smile is, and that’s why we offer beautiful crown and bridge restorations.
A dental crown is a tooth covering that is used to repair a decayed or damaged tooth. A crown is sometimes called a cap and can cover a tooth down to the gum line, protecting it from further problems. Your custom crown looks, feels, and functions just like a traditional tooth. It restores the shape of your tooth while making it stronger. This procedure keeps your tooth root in place, preserving bone density and volume.
A dental crown becomes part of your tooth, providing new structure and protection. Dr. Bergman recommends dental crowns and bridges for renewing function and aesthetics simply and economically.
Our crown and bridge treatment process begins with optical scanning (intraoral imaging) for precise evaluation. Then we prepare the tooth by cleaning the decayed or damaged enamel and shaping your tooth. This shaping will allow your crown or bridge to fit correctly over your tooth. We then take precise impressions of your tooth using a digital optical scanner and send them to the lab to fabricate your custom crowns.
The dental lab can create your custom porcelain crown or bridge with a quick turnaround time of 10-14 days. Once your custom prosthetic is available, you will come for the second visit, and our dentist will place your restoration and make any adjustments to ensure a comfortable fit.
Bridges
A dental bridge is the combination of multiple crowns together. A bridge is permanently cemented in place and can be as small as two teeth. It can also be placed across two or more implants. Most often, a dental bridge is used to replace a missing tooth in between two other teeth. It is called a 3-unit bridge. The missing tooth in the middle is filled with a fake tooth called a pontic. Just as with a crown, a bridge can be made from different materials. The most reliable type of bridge is a porcelain fused to metal bridge. First, a metal structure is fabricated over the teeth. Then porcelain is stacked on top of the metal to create an esthetic replacement for your teeth. Zirconia bridges and E-Max bridges are great replacements where the biting forces are less and esthetics is of greater concern (particularly the front six teeth).
A dental bridge is the appropriate treatment option when the teeth surrounding the empty space already have large fillings or crowns. A dental bridge is a quick and effective way to restore your dental health. A bridge can be fabricated in just two weeks and it will look and feel like natural teeth. In the interim a temporary bridge is placed. You do not go without teeth when a dental bridge is made.

FAQs
Is the procedure painful?
Our team ensures a comfortable experience, and local anesthesia is used to minimize discomfort.
How long do crowns and bridges last?
With proper care, Crowns and Bridges can last for many years, providing a long-term solution. On average, a bridge is expected to last 7-10 years. Good oral hygiene plays the biggest role in the longevity of the bridge. When bridges are not properly cared for, decay can develop underneath them within 12 months; however, a well-made bridge can last for decades. Historically, insurance companies pay for bridge replacements after 5 years. When a dental bridge fails, all replacement teeth are affected. For this reason an implant is a superior treatment alternative when the adjacent teeth are in good condition.
Is there downtime after the procedure?
Recovery is typically quick, and you can resume your normal activities shortly after.
